A few months ago I was introduced to a creator of very unique eyewear. SPEXWAX, a local company based here in San Diego, crafts sunglasses of many styles and themes, as well as proper prescription glasses using discarded vinyl. Yes, Vinyl; the audio format that, according to my dad, is “making a comeback.”
I got to visit the SPEXWAX lab to see how they are made. Using found vinyl from bargain bins and misprints scored from pressing facilities, the SPEXWAX crew designs, cuts, melts, glues, and spins the records into new use. So whole-minded are they in keeping items from entering the landfill, each vinyl sleeve is converted via origami into the case to hold the specs. The final product is pretty sexy, with the grooves still visible along with part of the original label.
I found them to be so fresh and wearable that I asked SPEXWAX to create 90 pairs of sunglasses using my past three albums: We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things., Love Is A Four Letter Word, and YES! Each pair is unique unto itself, and each displays a song title as well as album name on the temple. Plus, each pair is numbered and signed on the box, making them one-of-a-kind, limited, and super special for the collector. Take a peek for yourself beginning today, November 23 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET at the Online Store.
