You Got Life. You Gotta Live It.

July 15, 2013

When I lose someone, the hardest part is that I am no longer able to tell them I love them.

The music community celebrates Felipe Canete, who sang, danced and played guitar as an integral member of Luc & The Lovingtons. His Chilean heritage brought an authentic latin flavor to the heart-centered band, fusing music of many rhythms and styles to help create their unique sound.

On May 17th, Filipe (pictured left,) passed away as a result of a heart condition he’d managed all throughout his young life. He is survived by his wife Katy and their two year old son, Rio. Donations to help alleviate immediate financial stress can be made at

This weekend I had the pleasure of performing again with the new generation of The Lovingtons’ musical family, who are currently on the road fulfilling the tour that Filipe booked. (You may remember The Lovingtons from previous years’ tours, or by their hit THE FREEDOM SONG, which I recorded for my album last year.)

In a small private setting yesterday, musicians and friends who knew Filipe gathered to sing and share stories, shake his percussion instruments, and honor the mystical, magical spirit of a friend who will now live on inside all of our hearts. His passing reminds me to celebrate life.

In addition to being a father and a good friend, Felipe was also a teacher, blending language lessons with music to help his students connect more intimately and joyfully with the classroom curriculum. Joy was his modus operandi. Joy and Filipe were never not seen apart.

Despite having a diagnosed condition, Filipe only always lead with this heart; suggesting to me that having compassion for your weaknesses only makes you stronger. I will miss his smile, his accent, his dance moves, and immeasurable excitement to improve the attitude of the world, but he will live forever in the music and through the many hearts of those his touched.

The Los Angeles community will honor Filipe & The Lovingtons this Tuesday, July 16th at the Roxy’s intimate upstairs room in West Hollywood. Send your love!

Felipe is one of the people I met briefly that had a profound impact on me. Following his concert with Jason in 2010, I went to buy a cd. Felipe had the warmest smile and energy. He signed the cd… then held it and blessed it in silence for maybe 5 or 10 seconds. I still keep the cd loaded in the player in my car.

His music and energy was with me through my divorce in 2010 and still today. When I forget who I am or what I’m trying to do, I think of him.

Ash to ash, dust to dust, Nature Paradise is the place where an angel comes from and returns. A respected and loved human’s falling is another lightful star’s rising in the million-mile away galaxy. When we look up, he is there; when we listen quietly, he is singing as usual. (Particularly love his sounds of the harmonica.) Thanks dearly for Filipe’s love and yours to warm our heart. Cry sometimes is a good thing; just don’t forget to drink some water afterwards. xoxo

R.I.P for Felipe. God bless his wife, child, and each one of you. <3

Don’t worry, you can still tell him! I am sure he feels the same way about you and is sending a message back (wiring it?) such as: “Aww, Jason. I love you too, bro.” Perhaps he is equally sad that he can’t say it to you in person. Equal frustration? ;-)

Love is infinite and so is the connection with our loved ones. That’s the beauty of the eternity of life. (Even though I get how sad it is to feel that sense of loss. I still mourn the loss of those I have loved. BeLieve me.)

I also heard this great line in a poem read at a memorial one time: about how our loved one is not gone, they have simply moved the next room.
This tells it all to me in a lot of ways. I have had some wild experiences with my dad since he left, from incredible dreams, to the intuitive feeling of him and hearing his voice, seeing him in photos as a high vibration of light and more. This has made it easier to trust that when I talk to him, he gets it and responds. While I have my moments of incredible sadness of those milestones I won’t get to share or that I missed out on so many experiences with him in general, I feel like he is still there a long the way in whatever energetic form he is in right now.

I hope you feel the confidence that you can continue to connect with your dear friend, your brother. I am absolutely positive he feels your love and is reflecting it back tenfold.

I hope that the celebration of his life was uplifting! He will absolutely live on in music and in your heart. :)

Love from Chile / Amor desde Chile; Paula.

There are no words for loss. The only way to fill the void is to remember the beauty that will continue to unfold.

From a boy to a man who carried a heart so full that it created a condition we can’t understand or fix. I think he instinctively knew that this time, he planned to give big. Each moment in love, each moment in his full of grace; did some like you experience his loving embrace.

    Blessing to the family

Felipe Canete is love. J remember when you spoke at Leaders causing Leaders, the row, row, row your boat speech? Felipe was there, I had won one ticket (from you thank you again) Anyway, I had brought my family to see the Lovingtons the night before, after that show Felipe sang happy birthday to my son. Felipe was amazingly kind, he was a person you just met but felt instantly connected to. So at the Leaders Causing Leaders event I said hi again to the Lovingtons, Felipe insisted I had dinner with them backstage, and joked with The Lovingtons that he found their “surprise guest” since the mc had been hinting they would have one, but you had already left the building and they were a nervous. We all joined hands and gave thanks before we ate. He gave me half of his sub, and I gave half of my half to Matty Love. We talked about music, travel, family, Washington, mountains, middle school kids and my son who had heart surgery, that I have a hard time being strict with because of his condition. Felipe had a lot to say, he showed me the scar from his surgery, ends up they have a very similar condition. He told me to stop being too easy on my son, make him go to school everyday, push him to study and do his homework, and make everyday count. Felipe was a teacher too. Some time after that meeting he and Kathy became parents, my heart aches for the loss of such a beautiful person. I am struggling through tears to try to express to all of you my equal grief of the loss of Felipe and the gratitude of being so blessed to have gotten to know him. He was someone I can truly say, to know him is to love him. He made a difference, a positive growing difference, planting seeds of love in all he touched. So check out The Lovingtons, Sing with Señor (Felipe can rock a sock puppet), go to a live show, like them on Facebook and YouTube.
