Update from Awesometown

September 17, 2012

Special thanks to Tree Trust of Minneapolis, transforming lives and landscapes. And to Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (even though we got rained out this week. sad face.) I appreciate what you do!

Every time I roll up my sleeves to work with the incredible volunteers at our tree planting events, I learn something new, and I’m not just talking about deep root fertilization or how Peggy’s nail guy is running for Mayor. I continue to learn things about myself. I’ve begun to notice the best show days are the days I push the wheelbarrow around, dig a few holes, and earn a manly blister or two. There’s a lot to be said about getting off the tour bus and into somebody’s back yard. It’s not just a reality check, it’s good for your health.

To sing and travel is to occupy the air.

Planting trees and servicing them is to be grounded.

I created our Tree Project because I wanted to add more oxygen to the earth. What I didn’t calculate was all the extra oxygen I’d be getting to the lungs and brain, contributing to a calm demeanor, a profound sensation of freshness in all things, and the experience of loving life more than ever; Which, has led me to my new motto…

Get Dizzy Living.

Here’s a picture of the amazing Christina Perri with my dorky self planting a white oak tree in Minneapolis’ Midtown Greenway. We named the tree Judith and wished her a safe winter.

You should name the next tree you plant Ravina…

By the way, did the Gorge give birth to Sasquatch? If it did, your slip of the tongue might not have been so Freudian after all!

    What a beautiful venue!

Yo Bro what do you know, I am in the front row at tomorrow nights show! The stage lights are bright but look down to your right..you will see my smile when you sing 93 million miles. For me this is show #7, seems fitting that is in in a place like heaven. You have been a shining light through the ages, maybe one of your peeps will show me where back stage is….

I don’t mean to brag I don’t mean to boast but my garden and my chickens would love your compost…heeeyyyyy

    ugh…so cheesy…..

Anyway…I am hoping you get a chance to plant some trees because central washington is on fire right now….I know the trees will be sooo appreciative!

    See you tomorrow!

Your strong desire to connect to the earth is your spirit telling you to slow down and embrace the moment. Life is so fast paced that we sometimes forget to appreciate the very simple yet essential things in life. Nature is where we can slough off the facade society expects us to have and truly find ourselves. I wish I could show you pictures of my garden. Someday I hope it will become my garden of Eden.

KS95, the radio station I work for, sponsored that day. I was on the air, so I had to miss it. Bummer. Judith was my mother’s name, so that tree is very special to me. Thanks, Jason, for everything you do. And Christina, it was a pleasure meeting you a couple of years ago at our Live 95 show!

“I believe in the hands that work, in the brains that think, and in the hearts that love…I believe in sunshine, fresh air, friendship, calm sleep, beautiful thoughts.”

Seeing you soon (in, I think, an awesome aisle seat in section 118) – look up.
Sunshine, your beautiful voice… glad you’re coming.

    Much love,

Well then, you’re welcome to come get dirty at our building before the Vancouver show to keep up your energy! On Saturday we hauled dirt for about 5 hours to place around all the trees and bushes that we have at our complex. Even though my back hurts now, all that fresh air and sunshine is really healthy! And it was great to hang out and volunteer with all our neighbours!

xoxo See you on Friday, I’m super stoked because I won tickets to the VIP Meet & Greet today (that I couldn’t afford to buy) and I’m really looking forward to (finally) meeting you! (pinch me, I think I’m still dreaming!)

Amen. Never thought much about the expression ‘being grounded’ and how being in nature helps keep you (or get you) there. Spent almost my entire day outside planting, playing, and enjoying September with the boys and a few neighbors (no school). Definitely a grounding day. Life is Good. Stay dizzy. xo, JRJID

Jason, I know that it was rained out, but sadly, nothing was aired/posted/advertised/mentioned about the tree planting for KIBI. :/ – I hope you’ll ‘plant some roots’ here in Indy, on your (fingers-crossed) next tour. Peace, Love, and Trees. – BTW: The socks make the man. ;)

Super socks friend! Glad the tree planting is helping to keep you grounded on tour. Sending love to Judith, I hope she grows to be a big strong oak. I love climbing trees. Tree climbing is definitely on my top ten childhood memories. My yard was my favorite place to be, tire swing on a huge Oak tree, Pines, Maples, Locust, Cedar, Apple, Dogwoods, and Holly trees to climb. I am so grateful for all the new growth, surprises of spring, barefoot summers eating peas in the garden, huge leaf piles of fall, and magical icy winters of childhood that are the landscape of my soul. Forget the drama, go climb a tree.

Judith is beautiful. Awesome tube socks as well. I’d love for you to plant some trees in my neighborhood while your here, but the venue you’re playing is a three hour drive. May you be blessed for your kindness to the mother of us all. We’ll be singing along at the Gorge on Sept. 22.

The native American indians call trees for the “Standing whispering people”. If you sit, or stand, with your spine firmly pressed against the trunk (preferably a fully grown) and meditate; you will then access and be able to connect the air and the earth in your heart to be both; just like the tree itself is doing. And don’t forget to thank the tree afterwards :)
    Aloha,
    /Alexandra

Judith? What an ancient name for such a young thing! Not to worry. I’m sure she’ll grow into it after a few winters.

    Love

PS-Could you provide the names of the rest of your tree family? Sometimes good wishes work better when you say the name of the being they are direct toward.

    Double Love

Love the motto! You are such an inspiration. I was introduced to your music one year ago. It has been my faithful companion ever since. As I learned more about the man, your life has driven me to be better. How can I thank you? I had the honor of meeting you in Raleigh but lost the nerve to share my heart. My deep regret. I hope somehow you know how much your music and your influence brightens my life. You have changed me.

    Eternally grateful,
    Cathy

P.S. my favorite song of any song in the world is “Who’s Thinking about You Now”.
