Schlafen Zzzu Traum

March 21, 2012

The few weeks leading up to an album release is a restless one. Not because I’m excited for it to finally come out, which I am, but because the constant flux between time zones messes with my molecules. My usual sleep routine is about 12 hours every other night, and about 3 hours in between. I sleep fine on airplanes but doing so gives me energy once I’m on the ground which isn’t always convenient. Last night I fell asleep soundly at a decent hour thanks to a delicious cocktail of Shantaram and a warm bath. But still I leapt awake at 330 in a panic that I’d overslept my 530 alarm which was set for an appearance on morning TV, SAT1 Fruehstuecks Fernsehen, here in Germany. I celebrated in the dark with a fist pump when I discovered it was only 330 and in that half awake state I made a conscious effort to fall back to sleep into a sex dream which unfortunately didn’t happen. Those last two hours of sleep went by in a blip. Not even a flying dream or a chance to breathe underwater, which is my most preferred recurring dream theme.

I arrived in Berlin yesterday via Cancun, where we touched down for less than 24 hours to play a sandy set on the radio there. After a long nap, some exercise and an interview I had 3 hours left over for “spring break” which is all one really needs. Anything after those 3 hours is a just a repeat performance of the first 3 hours. Prior to that sunny stint I’d been rehearsing with the new band for a few days in Los Angeles in preparation for the summer’s exciting new tour. And just before that I did some press in New York, Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles again, London and Dubai. Then in the coming days I’ll get to rediscover Zurich, Paris, more London, Barcelona, and Amsterdam, topping off my trip an educational vacational on an organic farm in Tuscany. (thank you gamachan for the inspiration.) The climate there is similar to that on my own farm, therefore my goal is to pick up some ideas about food variety and growing methods for year round harvests! but I wouldn’t be surprised if I just sleep under a tree the whole time I’m there.

Today’s jet lag brought with it a tickle I couldn’t shake during a second sunrise performance of I Won’t Give Up, which is not a song that allows much room for laughter. But I couldn’t help it. And I tried to stop myself as we were on Live television after all. Pull it together man! one voice in my head told the other. But it was too late. A series of triggers led to what felt like a perfect storm for giggles.

1. Lotte, the show’s co-host, a snuggly bulldog with a serious under-bite barks at the top of the 1st chorus and startles me. 2. I ditch my guitar pick as I do before going into the bridge, and it bounces off Mona’s symbol with a comical ping. 3. I catch Adam, my guitar tech chuckle at the miraculous plectrum ricochet. 4. I start laughing. 5. I see Mona’s face in the monitor, which is running on a delay so it looks as though her mouth is not in sync with the song. I laugh some more. 6. I realize I’m laughing and that in itself becomes funny to me. 7. I remember I’m on a Live German television show at dawn. This too is funny for some reason. 8. Mona starts laughing. 9. My voice cracks and we laugh some more. 10. My career is over.

Ich entschuldige mich.

Und ich gehe, jetzt zu schlafen.

I really wanted to watch the Frühstücksfernsehen, I watch it every day EXCEPT that one day you were live there. I was kinda annoyed.. but I’m so lucky that I’ve seen you in Berlin last year.
So unbelievable that you’ll be in Germany again this year. Thanks so much!

hahahahaha that makes me laugh just imagining it. You gotta love those moments where even though the moment is supposed to be serious you have that internal voice that just can’t stop the infectious laughter. Good one.

    Jason,

    1. One time in my life have I been able to influence my dreams, after waking in the middle of the night. It was in jr. high and it was a nightmare. In my dream I was waking up to go pee and when I was in the hallway headed to the bathroom, a dark shape – a blog – rushed at me and pinned me to the wall. I kept waking up that night & having the same dream when I’d fall asleep. Finally, after waking for the 4th or 5th time, I decided that if I had the dream again, I’d fight back. I did have the dream again, and I pushed against the blob, and it disintegrated, letting me finally make it to the bathroom so I could pee. In my dream, I mean.

    2. Your “educational vacational” phrasing reminds me of a service called “vocation vacation” which one can sign up for. Various professionals allow you to shadow them for a week, to learn about their line of work. You can shadow a lawyer, doctor, farmer, pastry chef, welder, etc. Just about anything. I think that would be a lot of fun.

    3. I would like to shadow you! Or, really, just a singer/songwriter who travels around with their guitar. You may be familiar with the Potbelly sandwich franchise – well, in Chicago, they usually have a musician serenading customers at lunchtime. Most locations have an area for them – a little loft or a tiny stage. They bring their guitar, turn on the mic and provide us all with nice music while we eat lunch. I always have the urge to climb up into the loft and sing along with the person performing. Today was no exception – he did a great rendition of High and Dry by Radiohead.

Funny I had started a dream journal because I was traveling so much in my sleep. Your prefered dream is a shared one, I want to swim with the whales and hear mermaids again sigh. I did dream of flying above an orchard reaching for a glowing orange, and I decided I wanted to live like this (off the land and off a paycheck) and so I flew to the ocean and thought “Can I live under there?” and woke up darn.

Happy to read you’re going to rest your nice person in a so wonderful place as Tuscany is… especially on early spring!! I’ve lived near there for years… But I think that plant varieties perfectly matching Socal weather can better be found in Sicily (where I was born). I must confess that first time I came to visit San DIego and L.A. I was totally astonisched findin out that there were wonderful prickly pears and colourfull sour figs growing in abundance..! Ever since…every time I go back there I feel like back home in Sicily…! See nice pics & biblio below

BERLIN FANS…if this is available PLEASE POST!
Other than that, I want to say that for months now I’ve been thinking “I should contact Jian Ghomeshi and ask him to do an interview with you on Q”. And SURPRISE I tune in one night and there you are! Even bigger surprise, that you get to the studio and realize you guys have played together (he’s got the best arts/music/etc. show in Canada, I love his voice). Luckily, the whole uncut version is available online for me to listen to later. I loved what you said about your studio albums….that they are the souvenir that one picks up after the show because you enjoyed the live performance. For me, it’s the opposite…I pick up the album (after listening to the live songs on youtube, which makes the album seem like a polished up version of a very familiar playlist) and wait in anticipation for the live show, which I know will be much more amrazing live than the album. And BTW, the only ‘technology’ you are missing in the studio is…FANS!!!! I know you had a profound experience at We Day, but I have a question…did you get to stand in that bowl (not when you were on stage) and hear the crowd? I did, it was truly OVERPOWERINGLY (is that a word?) INSPIRING!

Love you and what you do! Keep on being love!

Dreams pass into the reality of action. From the actions stems the dream again; and this interdependence produces the highest form of living.
    Anais Nin

It’s something beautiful that unfolds time and time again – one really can feed the other. Own your dream state as just as you would your waking one and everything will fall into place. Gorgeous possibilities happen and will open for you. (Celebrate the blips, they create space for wishes to come true – try to think of them as kind of like shooting stars.)

    Much love,
    Carmen

Dreams….. or memories of other lives when you COULD fly and when you COULD breath under water?

Some metaphysical reading suggestions for all those plane trips and/or wakeful jet-lagged moments:

Any book by Michael Newton, the late regression hypnotherapist (Destiny of Souls, Journey of Souls, Life between Lives)

‘Legacy from the stars’ by Dolores Cannon, my teacher, the very much alive regression hypnotherapist (other books – The three waves of volunteers and the new earth, Between death and life, Convoluted universe etc)

EXCERPT FROM LEGACY FROM THE STARS Through regressive hypnosis, hypnotherapist Dolores Cannon has discovered several cases where the subjects relived other lifetimes as inhabitants on other planets in strange environments. We are all extraterrestrials. In the history of the cosmos, Earth is considered a young planet, and our souls have been around forever and will continue to be around forever. Thus Earth is not our only home. We have lived many lives in unusual environments before deciding to journey here and learn the lessons of Earth. After our journey schooling is completed on this planet, we will journey onward and outward to discover new worlds to explore. Earth is merely a stop-over in our long adventure. The memories of these soul journeys are recorded in our subconscious, and Dolores Cannon shows that they can be retrieved through regressive hypnosis.

    Sleep is beautiful and mysterious.

    Guten Morgen Jason,
i was wondering what happened during you sang the song. That was so funny,….don’t care about it, it makes you more sympathetic. It was a funny version of ”i won’t give up – to stop laughing” finally. i liked it. Especially when Lotte (it was the first performance) went between you and Mona twice.
    Tschüß
    P.S. Your german is fantastic.

I’m surprised about the interview. They did some “good” research, one of the first interviewers who really seemed to be well prepared.

PS: Remember, Google doesn’t always translate right. :D
“And I go to sleep now” would be “Und jetzt gehe ich schlafen.”, but however. ;)

    Have fun buddy!

Great to have you here in Europe – enjoy your journey, especially the organic farm in Tuscany.
I’m still hoping to win a ticket for the showcase in Zurich!!!
